МЕМОРИАЛ / ЛИКВИДАЦИЯ
MEMORIAL / LIQUIDATION
The “International Historical Educational Charitable and Human Rights Society ‘Memorial’” is dedicated to investigating political tyranny, human rights, and the fates of survivors of the Soviet gulags. In recognition thereof, it was awarded the Alternative Nobel Prize in 2004 and, together with organisations in Ukraine and Belarus, the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022. Oleg Orlov, then 70 years old and the long-time head of the organisation, was sentenced to two years and six months in a labour camp in February 2024 for critical statements made about Russia's war against Ukraine. He was released five months later as part of a prisoner exchange and, like all the other protagonists of the film, including the film-makers, now resides in Western Europe. The documentary traces the development of the liquidation proceedings up to Orlov's conviction and accompanies him and fellow representatives of Russian civil society during the trials and anti-war demonstrations on Moscow's Red Square – which were immediately nipped in the bud by the omnipresent police. Memorial itself continues to operate, internationally, to the present day.
