When Steve, arrested for carrying out contract killings, is led into the prison’s communal shower shortly after his incarceration, it comes to light that he was born a woman. He is transferred to a new wing where he indifferently awaits death; everything is irrelevant and insignificant – that is until Irma enters his life. The claustrophobic pastor's daughter rarely leaves the building and is now tasked with teaching him to read and write. Amidst the prison's filthy cells, abusive guards, and an obsessive prison doctor, an unusual connection develops in which both seem to find healing, and a love like the dance of the mayflies – together with its imminent end. MAYFLIES, Emília Goldberg's impressive feature film debut, one created on a shoestring budget, tells this story with a superb cast and meticulous costume and set design. Based on the true story of Hungarian assassin Pipás Pista, who remains today surrounded in myth, the film is a poetic reflection on the fleeting nature of the moment, the transience of life, and sacrifice for love.
