An extended encounter in the seaside city of Batumi, on the Georgian Black Sea coast. Nana works as a seasonal waitress, by day in a restaurant, by night in a beach bar. Niko, a refugee from Abkhazia, is a policeman. Sopo is a street urchin and familiar face for the police, regularly picked up and delivered to an asylum, only to vanish shortly thereafter time and again. Three individuals far from home, whose paths cross for one short summer: Niko falls in love with Nana, who in turn meets with Sopo after her double shifts in order to go for a swim. A fragile constellation of three restless individuals who find neither home nor respite.

In her debut feature film the director portrays a category of everyday existence divided between a struggle for survival, mechanic understatement and the remote dream of a better life. An almost weightless neorealist portrayal of a country’s search for identity, driven by a psychologically convincing portrayal of character and a composition which successfully derives clear-cut vibrance from the impromptu suburban cityscape characteristic of the erstwhile “red Riviera’s” marquee city.

Come the end of the season the protagonists go separate ways, parting with a tearless farewall in place of tragedy, the longing felt by all summed up by the postcard Sopo always carries on her person: a pristine white beach by a distant sea.
