In Casa Blanca, a secluded fishing village in the port of Havana, lives seventy-six-year-old Nelsea together with her thirty-seven-year-old son Vladimir, who suffers from Down syndrome. Vladimir is the only person who takes care of ailing Nelsea, whilst she in turn is the only person around to ensure that Vladimir keeps out of trouble. That is, until she falls ill.

With her son suffering from Down syndrome, Nelsea would have been within her rights to entrust his care to a state-run care home. Nevertheless she fulfils his wish and allows her son to stay at home. They live in a small, sparse room, in an overcrowded house together with numerous other families. Vladimir takes care of his mother, whilst she in turn ensures that her son makes more productive use of his time than simply assisting the local fishermen, with whom he often shares a drink. Ideally she would always have Vladimir at home, to which end she can often be found wandering the streets of Casa Blanca looking for her son, who again has stayed out later than agreed.

A poignant documentary on an elderly woman and her disabled son in a remote village on Cuba. A film about caring and being cared for, about life, survival and the struggle to survive on the outskirts of Havana. WMH
