Dogs in Havana: they belong to a variety of social classes, with each and every one of them enjoying a different standard of living, from audacious opulence to desperate poverty. You thus might say that that the expression every dog has its day doesn't apply to Cuba.

Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión (EICTV)

Canines lead widely differing existences in Cuba, from strays, to pets and fighting dog breeds, far removed from the ideal of socialist equality. Some live in kennels, such as Canyufil, who finds himself chased from house entrances and has no choice but to search for food amongst scrap heaps, whilst others work hard, such as the attack dog Bule, who guards a fitness studio, or Pekingese Whisky, of whom its owner has high hopes at a grooming competition. And then there's a third category, which lead a life of luxury. It would appear that only death knows no difference of social status in Cuba.

This short film, shot by Spanish filmmaker Pedro Pío whilst studying at the International Film School in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba, offers unconventional insight into both daily life in Cuba and the island's social structure. WMH
