Drinking bouts and vulgar behaviour amongst first-year university students on weekend breaks is by no means solely restricted to Hungary and yet the country has witnessed a growing number of female victims of abuse in recent years, with the number of unreported cases presumed to be significant.

Intoxicated young men bellow out vulgar songs on the station platform and in the train, the girls accompanying them would appear to be more than a little tipsy on this, the end of a welcome camp break for students of a respected university law department. Alongside the mêlée one youngster sits alone, staring blankly out of the carriage window; whilst attempting to comfort her, they discover a scar of humiliation on her shoulder, left behind in blue ink. What has happened to her and will the culprits ever be brought to justice? The brusque reactions of the camp-leaders reflect a general indifference. JG
