With Misselwitz a film about women is never simply a film about women. Instead she's interested in the elements that constitute human existence, including the formative circumstances of the past. A train journey from Zwickau to Sassnitz leads the director to a highly diverse collection of women, both young and old, to factories and apartments, a school of dance, a youth workshop courtyard, a children's home. Thus life in a country that hoped to implement a utopia and derailed somewhere along the line is revealed in manifold ways.
