Seven burly guys and a petite woman; one of the private coal merchant's businesses in the Prenzlauer Berg district of Berlin. Coal-hikers had a bad reputation, were regarded as coarse-natured, commonly ex-inmates and alcoholics. How is a woman to earn respect in such circumstances? The camera accompanies the men and woman at work, calls on them at home, listens to what they have to say. The sequences, calmly-shot and intricate, give us a chance to take a look beneath the surface. A wonderfully photographed snapshot of Berlin in the eighties and the people at the bottom; a faithful depiction of how a social stratum lived and viewed an era. KF
