In the Donets Basin, the easternmost region of the Ukraine traditionally more inclined towards Russia than the West, orange is predominantly identified not as a colour of political symbolism, but as the home colour of FC Shakhtar Donetsk, the team that unexpectedly won the UEFA Cup in 2009. The club is characterised by contrasting worlds, with fans who live on the poverty line, in eternal fear of losing their livelihoods and a billionaire owner by the name of Rinat Akhmetov, together with his entourage from the pro-Russia “blue” party. Both chairman and fans feel unrepresented by the Orange Revolution, as well as political ongoings in Kiev as a whole.

A socio-political snapshot from the east of the Ukraine.
