In 1990 Günter Grass travelled to Altdöbern in order to paint a portrait of pit mining. Two years later he speaks with Wolfgang Thierse about the images he observed and the tension that exists between artistic inspiration and social tragedy.

Stefan Richter - born 1960 in Berlin. After graduating in History of modern literature and Fine Arts in Jena, he subsequently worked as a journalist and author for TV and print media from 1991-94.
