THE BLACKS

A Croatian elite paramilitary unit at the end of the war in 1995: three soldiers are killed shortly before a ceasefire is announced. Streaks of blood in the provisional headquarters, located in the garage of a secluded office building, tell of the dirty work that was carried out here during the war. An explosives expert joins up and almost immediately generates mistrust within the unit. His task is to help blow up a dam in order to flood a nearby village. Meanwhile the cessation of hostilities has already been announced via radio.

The surviving men are, because of the death of their comrades and the unexpected end to the war, doubly irritated. The proverbial skeletons in the closet and the impending, peace-induced disbandment of the unit are at the forefront of everyone's mind. Helplessness and fear of social responsibility lead to a mutual suspicion with fatal consequences: the search for the bodies of their comrades-in-arms becomes a kind of catharsis, after which the soldiers ultimately find the real enemy within themselves.

Filmed in a time loop and caught in few takes, the psychogram of this group of men offers up a remarkably nuanced image of the fraught relations between the protagonists, characterised as they are by mutual aggression, self-doubt and moral dilemmas.
