Narrated to a rich stream of imagery and encompassed by a mood that fluctuates between a sense of euphoria and stagnation KHIBULA is a poetic reflection on the workings of power. After the success of SIMINDIS KUNDZULI/CORN ISLAND (2014) George Ovashvili returns with an allegorical journey to the depths of the human soul, as well as the beauty and elemental force of nature.

The President, once national hero and liberator, is removed from power and forced to take refuge in the wild mountainous regions of his homeland, accompanied by only a select band of faithful followers. In the hope of encountering loyal supporters that might yet help him back to power, the group make their way across snow-covered mountains and challenging mountain passes, through dense forest and across rapid streams, both breathtaking and full of dangers at once. By constantly moving from one hiding place to the next the group attempts to steer clear of enemies and yet a seemingly spectral presence keeps them under enormous psychological pressure. The all-encompassing nature, the group’s refuge, proves to be an unpredictable force, whilst by no means every remote home is inhabited by well-wishers. Who is the President still able to trust? Gradually this former Head of State’s aims become blurred, as he is forced to make a momentous decision. CR
