To watch on whilst others feel unobserved, be a fly on the wall whilst they deceive, keep up appearances or enjoy moments of happiness, these powers are usually preserved to God alone. And marketing manager Emil. He has installed cameras in the living spaces of those around him, allowing him to intervene to help or hinder, as and when he sees fit.

Miramar film

Emil runs an advertising agency and writes books in his spare time. When his paraplegic father asks him to install a camera in his room in order to establish who exactly has been stealing from him, Emil stumbles across an idea for a book: he installs numerous CCTV cameras, in the office of his wife, a psychotherapist, in the bathroom of his father-in-law, a retired army general, and at work, all without the knowledge of those involved. Surveillance soon turns into an obsession, as Emil engrosses himself in the intimacies of his closest relatives and colleagues and turns the knowledge he gains on affairs, deceit, betrayal and minor gaffs to his own advantage. His newfound fixation soon proves his downfall however.

In his second feature film, director Ilian Djevelekov deals with highly topical issues such as individual freedom in an age of all-encompassing surveillance, addiction to information and the impact of so-called transparency on social interaction. WMH
