Spalnyi Rajon

Bedroom Town

Stanislav Malkov
Russia, 2017, 20 Min

Overworked, hardly a minute for housework, no time at all for his private life. Vasya lives a life devoid of energy and passion. In principle he possesses all the necessary ingredients for successful adulthood: he’s married, has a prestigious job, a flat, plans on having a child, and yet he doesn’t know how to combine them into a harmonious whole.

Saint-Petersburg State University of Film and Television

A poignant parable on the process of growing up: Vasya moves from home to work and back again without appearing to take cognizance of his actions; powerless against the incessant passing of time, which drives him forward and continues to set new milestones. It’s a condition familiar to many:  weary of his surroundings, he repeatedly refuses to address his duties, problems, and most importantly his feelings. It’s only when an unexpected guest helps him out of serious difficulties that he understands the need for change.

A visually striking and yet intimate reflection on modern life and the seemingly forgotten yearning for happiness and love. Director Stanislav Malkov captures seemingly mundane settings with sensitivity and an eye for detail, thus transforming them into the remarkable backdrops for his heartwarming tale. DJ
