Ukraine, 2017, 20 Min

A father in search of his son: in a border district in the east of the Ukraine a civilian car attempts to break through a checkpoint. Ukrainian soldiers forcibly attempt to prevent the driver from advancing into the combat zone, and yet a desperate father can be hard to stop.

Back in 2014 fierce fighting broke out in the eastern Ukraine, a military conflict which has, to date, claimed the lives of in excess of 10,000 victims, an absolutely appalling figure. For the local population these numbers have meant the loss of loved-ones, and the unbearable uncertainty surrounding the fate of siblings, parents and children. A father refuses to accept the dictates of war and sets off on a journey along the frontline in search of his conscript son. In the process he risks provoking the ire of the pro-Russian enemy. Questions remain as to how this tragedy will end and what lessons we will learn from it.

A gripping film that allows for both depth and nuance, as well metaphorical imagery. JG
