"Neither profit nor fame, but an attitude of altruistic love towards every brother and sister, and thus the nation as whole" went the motto of this remarkably liberal movement, which promoted not only sport but also the idea of the nation as well as pan-Slavism. Consisting of around twenty groupings, all based in Upper Lusatia, these managed to generate an interest in Sorbian identity during an era shaped by growing assimilation and German nationalism. Former Sokoł activists speak of the practice lessons, their ideals and the hostility they came up against, as well as the organisation's forced self-liquidation in 1933. The viewer is accompanied through the material by "Kašpork" and "Sokoł Jan": historical hand puppets, created by artist and Sokoł activist Měrćin Nowak-Njechorński, which provided entertainment during Sokoł-organised events. The film itself represents the broaching of a long suppressed issue, with the re-establishment of the Sokoł movement having been hindered during GDR times. GL
