Voice of the Glacier

Yadykar Ibraimov
Kazakhstan, 2022, 80 Min

It is well known that glaciers are melting due to the climate crisis, but how exactly does this happen? Impressively photographed, harrowing eco-thriller about the melting Tujuksu glacier in Kazakhstan - and the work of the scientists who document this process.

The Tujuksu in Kazakhstan has lost about 57 million cubic metres of ice since 1958. Because it is melting so quickly, it is assumed that the glacier, which is important for the water supply of the whole of Central Asia, will no longer exist by about 2050. The region is thus threatened with acute water shortages. The consequences will be devastating: social and economic tensions on the ground are already pre-programmed. Yadykar Ibraimov's breathtaking nature footage shows the work of the scientists who document the melting process of the glacier, which they can only climb on foot. The director also gives a historical overview of research activities that already existed at the beginning of the 20th century. He delivers shocking images, information and food for thought that resonate for a long time.
