VUČJA GOZBA
THE FEAST OF THE WOLF
Performance
The wolf is back in the area around Benkovac, a small town in Bukovica, in northern Dalmatia. With the arrival of the wolf, fears, myths, and conspiracy theories take root. For the most part, it’s older people who live in this socially isolated region with its numerous empty villages and dilapidated houses; remnants of the wars that led to the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia. Those who remain often make a living from livestock farming, and yet predators threaten the livestock. Ana, a veterinarian, tries to take a more rational approach to the wolf phenomenon. She is paid by the Croatian state and is constantly told that "Brussels" and the Croatian government are releasing wolves and poisonous snakes by helicopter. An old shepherd claims to have witnessed this with his own eyes. In Ana, director Jadran Boban finds a charismatic protagonist who knows how to assert herself. His film portrays a remote, scenically enthralling region. A region whose inhabitants he approaches with a mixture of investigative distance and human warmth – just like Ana who, although often driven to desperation the views of the people here, nevertheless finds that she belongs.
