With the onset of the Russian invasion, Erko resolves to help in Ukraine as a volunteer medic. And yet the longer his missions become, the more removed he grows from his family back in Estonia. An Estonian perspective on the war in Ukraine and the burden that volunteers have to shoulder in its shadows.

Erko wants to help where the need is greatest. Despite lacking a medical background, he becomes a medic in Ukraine, delivering donations of food and clothes to war-affected areas and organising relief supplies and transport vehicles. What begins as an honourable decision soon escalates to the point of obsession however: Erko himself speaks of it as an escape from the reality that awaits him at home. With each mission, his bond with his fellow volunteers grows stronger, as does the feeling of being urgently needed on the ground – and with it, the distance between him and his wife and children. Home becomes a parallel world that he no longer understands and in which he is no longer understood. BETWEEN BORDERS tells of Erko's personal story and traumatic experiences, and at the same time of the burden and costs that all those involved in the war, voluntarily or otherwise, as well as their families, have to bear. In doing so, it focuses on the problems and repercussions that extend to the fringes of war and are rarely discussed in the news, depicting this in scenes that go beyond deployments in combat zones: Erko during a visit to an orphanage, during a seemingly endless wait for a mechanic, and time and again on the car journeys during which he reports on his deployments. He is constantly on the move. Between home and his front-line family and comrades, Estonia and Ukraine, between two parallel universes – and between the limits of his ability to help and his own exhaustion.
