The psychological shadows of war hang over this documentary, shaping family life. The camera mostly stays in medium shots and close-ups, pulling us right into the family’s relationships – almost as if we belong to them. The mother worries about the progress of the war and that her sons may one day have to play in a war zone. The father teaches them how to throw snowballs without crushing the rose bushes. Meanwhile, the children already play at war themselves, tossing imaginary grenades and pretending to shoot at each other.
Particularly revealing are the moments when director Lesya Dyak speaks with Serhiy. His fear of responsibility for others – a fear that has followed him since the war – led him, after two years at home, to leave his family and return to the front in 2022.
Dad’s Lullaby was filmed in 2018, when different phases of the Russian war in Ukraine had already reached Crimea and parts of the Donbas. The film shows, with painful precision, how wars and their consequences tear apart souls and families, striking at the very heart of society.
