War against nature: Lush green forests, picturesque rivers, peacefully grazing deer—that was once upon a time. Instead: Dead fish, burnt trees, ravaged landscapes. An inventory of Ukraine's damaged nature, which will bear the scars of the ongoing war for a long time to come.

The camera in Dmytro Hreshko's documentary stoically depicts the destruction of nature and ecosystems that the Russian war of aggression, together with the human suffering, has brought upon Ukraine. Poignant drone footage shows areas, perforated by missile strikes, where destroyed military equipment and the skeletons of large wild animals have now become part of the landscape. Shot after shot exemplifies the extent to which natural treasures are being destroyed in Ukraine. Filming primarily took place in the country's numerous national parks, which have suffered from Russian attacks just as heavily as residential buildings in urban areas.

Yet while the war still rages on, people are already beginning to clean up – mine sweepers scour the fields, the remains of burnt-out tanks are being removed. And isn’t that a woodpecker tapping on a dead-looking tree? Or a beetle crawling over a bomb still buried deep in the ground? Images like these quietly remind us of the resilience of nature and its ability to recover from even the greatest of destruction.
