Dule's father refuses to hear about the newfound happiness of his neighbour, who long ago sold his house and moved to Germany. And Dule, too, says they can't leave their home - after all, he and his father have just built a new greenhouse in the garden. The mine is never far from their thoughts however: detonations are a daily occurrence, grey sludge spews forth from the tap, and dust clouds the air. And ultimately it leaves its mark on Dule's body too.
Instead of spelling out the now familiar political debates surrounding the consequences of raw material extraction, director David Jovanović explores the childlike emotional world of his young protagonist: Dreamlike images and a dark soundscape convey the oppressive atmosphere created by the impending loss of homeland brought about by open-pit mining. Sun Never Again was filmed in the region surrounding the town of Bor in eastern Serbia, where a massive copper mine not only pollutes the environment, but also poses an acute threat to a whole village. Its residents, for the most part members of the Vlach minority, were actively involved in the film's creation.
