Ondřej Trojan quite deliberately set his eccentric comedy in a fictional location in the north Bohemian province. The story was originally supposed to take place in Varnsdorf, on the border with Saxony, in the 1990s. The Wild West period, when prostitutes lined the streets at the border crossings and petty criminals set up their sketchy businesses there, are now long gone however. The stereotypes about the once Sudeten German, northern area of the Czech Republic, continue to live on however. THE BANGER defiantly toys with prejudices and the arrogant jokes that accompany them; which in the process lose their hostile edge yet maintain their caricature-like drive. Pub humour in keeping with the spirit of the age and displaying a keen sense of intuition: “My film is a comedy that works with exaggeration, it definitely doesn't make fun of the region. I like the characters and the people from the north” says the director. BB
