The tree is guarded by an evil spirit, who is only willing to part with his treasured possession on one condition: should he be rejected by the king's daughter, the prince will come under the spirit's power, which indeed is how the story pans out. The princess isn't willing to give in however, and sends her father on a quest for the tree, on which he also enters into a pact with the spirit of the forest: a life for a life. The spirit thus also welcomes the princess into his realm, where prince and princess are reunited and find common cause in their pursuit of freedom in this remake produced within public-broadcaster ARD's “Sechs auf einen Streich” (Eng: Six at One Go) series.
