ISABEL AUF DER TREPPE

ISABEL ON THE STAIRS

The film takes up the destinies of those Chilean refugees, who were forced to flee their homeland after the fall of the Allende regime in 1973. Many of these ended up in the GDR, where despite the fact that great official importance was attached to the concept of solidarity, the locals in fact proved to have difficulties engaging with foreign cultures. This contradiction is addressed by the director in this work, told from the perspective of twelve-year-old Isabel and her mother Rosita. On the surface the two appear to be well received in East Berlin of the late seventies; what occurs on the inside however appears to only be of interest for Isabel’s neighbour and contemporary Philipp.
