Ente Gut! Mädchen allein zu Haus

Fortune favors the Brave

Norbert Lechner
Germany, 2016, 95 Min

Adulthood and friendship: When Linh's mother has to head to Vietnam, the eleven-year-old is required to temporarily care for her little sister, as well as take responsibility for her mother's stall. No one is to find out however, least not the Social Welfare Department, and yet neighbouring child Pauline somehow catches wind of the situation.

A creation of the Der besondere Kinderfilm (The Special Children's Film) initiative, this film is a charming, witty tale of two girls who become friends despite their many differences. For her age Linh is remarkably mature and responsible, not least due to her upbringing. Pauline, on the other hand, is rather cheeky and regards any tasks involving responsibility as the domain of her parents. She soon finds herself making clumsy attempts to blackmail the two sisters, though she's in fact only trying to make friends: Pauline also doesn't have the easiest of lives, teased as she is at school due to her ginger hair.

FORTUNE FAVORS THE BRAVE broaches important issues such as early adultification, a norm in many cultures, as well as the integration of migrants and the problem of bullying at school. AB
