In her feature debut, Katarína Gramatová captures a boy’s coming-of-age in a small Slovakian village. Enrique lives with his bitter grandmother and waits for calls from his absent mother, who works abroad. Through quiet, immersive storytelling and subtle background cues, we witness the fragility of youth, the complexity of family ties, and the emotional cost of migration. The film draws on Gramatová’s childhood and her observations of rural life in Utekáč. She cast non-professional teens for authenticity and uses documentary-like scenes to highlight the resilience and recklessness of adolescence. When Enrique learns the truth about his mother, he is forced to question his identity and her intentions. Gramatová explores women’s survival strategies across generations and how abandonment, silence, and sacrifice shape a child’s worldview. Instead of assigning blame, the film invites empathy for those who leave and those left behind.
