DIARY FOR MY CHILDREN
Performance
Alongside the usual joys and struggles of adolescence and youthful defiance, Juli begins to experience and increasingly recognize the political climate of the country, as well as the ideological rift between authoritarian Magda and her brother János. Márta Mészáros, one of Europe’s most distinctive filmmakers and the first female director from Central and Eastern Europe to receive the European Film Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award, began her career as a documentary filmmaker. This background, together with her personal memories and life experiences, deeply informs DIARY FOR MY CHILDREN, the first part of her celebrated Diary trilogy (DIARY FOR MY LOVERS and DIARY FOR MY MOTHER AND FATHER followed). Widely regarded as her most famous and most autobiographical work, the trilogy not only portrays Juli’s personal journey but also traces Hungary’s gradual political transformation. Shot in black and white, DIARY FOR MY CHILDREN creatively incorporates period documentary footage, enhancing the film’s authentic evocation of the spirit of late 1940s Hungary. The film premiered in 1984 in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, where it received the Grand Jury Prize.
