ZEMLJO KRAST

STEALING LAND

Žiga Virc
AT/SI , 2025, 70 Min

The pandemic is now over, and two modern couples of helicopter parents meet. Whilst the children have been best friends since kindergarten, this quartet of parents is more a forced partnership than anything else. And when someone utters the word "Palestine," tension explodes. One word leads to another, and yet no one here listens to anyone. A cynical reading of society in 2025.

In “Stealing Land”, the popular Slovenian school yard game in which you have to steal land from your fellow players, Luka calls himself "Palestine" and Lun "America." That’s not allowed, remarks one mother, and a father counters with a short lecture on US imperialism. The group at the table have just about managed to make peace again when, and at this point alcohol has entered the picture, the conversation again begins to gather pace: moving from pedigree dog breeding ("just like under Hitler") to swingers' clubs, COVID vaccinations are covered, as is Russia-Ukraine, and then there’s "Palestine", a topic which continues to divide the two couples, and at one point the theory that American films are to blame for the fact that people “here” no longer hold their wine glasses by the stem because it looks cooler the way Brad Pitt holds the glass.

Created over two days of workshops, the result is a chamber-play-like comedy which pokes fun, with an almost therapeutic humour, at all those dinner table discussions amongst family and friends that see us forever argue only to maybe make peace again. A tour de force of self-righteousness and doubt sprinkled with grand gestures – just like in real life. With his latest film, director Žiga Virc continues the Kafkaesque, self-ironic tone of his mockumentary HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM!, which featured at the FFC in 2016.
