THE VISITOR

THE VISITOR

Vytautas Katkus
LT/NO/SE , 2025, 115 Min

A home in a foreign land: Danielus, a young Lithuanian, leaves his family in Norway to sell his deceased parents' apartment, located on the Lithuanian Baltic Sea. Back in his former homeland, he attempts to revive old friendships: The once familiar surroundings no longer welcome him as they once did however – and his visit gradually turns into a farewell.

When Danielus returns to his deceased parents' apartment, he hopes for a homecoming. He seeks out old friends and tries to immerse himself in his former life. People and circumstances have changed however – and no matter how hard he tries, he no longer fits in. His attempts to reconnect with his past lead to increasingly surreal situations. At times, the line between dream and reality blurs; and the small island off the coast with its lush apple tree in any case looks like something from an otherworldly paradise.

This contemplative film is far removed from conventional plot-driven dramaturgy and allows its protagonist plenty of space and time to breathe. The camera, operated by director Vytautas Katkus himself, always knows or at least suspects more than the characters themselves; Its unusual positions and precisely composed framing of shots often indicate how a scene will develop before it has even begun.
