MURPHY’S LAW
Performance
Angelos Frantzis' MURPHY'S LAW focuses on failed actress Maria. Her coma proves a gateway into a state of inbetweeness of imagined identities, in which decisions, regrets, and the great what ifs are reflected. No spectacular multiverse frenzy, the end result is more in the nature of an intimate, reflexive labyrinth.
The film unfolds like a composite dream: non-linear, at times nebulous, yet always emotionally grounded. Each new guise Maria takes on is more than just an alternate reality—it is the return of hidden impulses: guilt, longing, strength, or the silent fear of losing herself.
Katia Goulioni delivers an impressively introspective performance in the lead role, switching effortlessly between the various first-person characters whilst allowing the vulnerability of the core character to shine through. Her silence often resonates more powerfully than words. The film deliberately follows convoluted paths—just as memory and grief do—and foregoes easy resolutions. Alongside the idea, the most remarkable thing about this film is its sincerity. It asks “What if?” less out of mere curiosity, and more out of inner necessity. It is about the self we leave behind, the self we learn to live with—and the self we may wish to return to.
