BIWA JÄRVE 8 NÄGU

8 VIEWS OF LAKE BIWA

Marko Raat
EE/FI, 2024, 126 Min

On a boat trip, several school children disappear without a trace. The tragedy sets eight stories in motion. Inspired by Japanese mythology, a mysterious panorama of loss, change, and passion unfolds in a remote Estonian fishing village.

Only Hanaka returns from the fateful trip. The girl, by this pointalmost no longer a child, holds fast to a promise she made to her best friend: never to grow up. Yet a budding passion that can no longer be suppressed causes her to falter. Just likeother protagonists in these eight stories who struggle to maintain their emotional balance, such as a grieving teacher, a fisheries inspector from afar, and a taciturn icon painter, each connected to the lake in their own unique way. Inspired by the classic Eight Views of Lake Biwa—a famous cycle of poetic landscape paintings depicting Japan's largest lake—director Marko Raat transposes its meditative imagery to an Estonian fishing village. Between reality and legend, an evocative mosaic emerges of guilt, metamorphosis, and the spirits that dwell deep within us.
