BRAT

BROTHER

Maciej Sobieszczański
PL, 2025, 98 Min

A powerful coming-of-age drama about two very different brothers from a family on the brink: While Dawid fights his way, with iron discipline, from one judo victory to the next, Michał finds himself ever more entwined by the machinations of his father, who manipulates him from within the confines of prison. Amidst this turmoil, their mother finally dares to break away and start anew.

David is 14 and full of strength, talent—and anger. He dreams of becoming a great judo champion. The legacy of his imprisoned father hangs over him like a shadow however. He repeatedly loses control. His path to international success is, first and foremost, a battle against himself. And against the criminal machinations of his younger brother, Michał. Whilst his mother finds the courage to make a fresh start with his judo instructor, his father continues to pull the strings from within prison, ultimately pitting the brothers against each other. And yet it is precisely in this chaos that an opportunity to escape the cycle of violence, anger, and guilt reveals itself. With its raw imagery, gripping acting and almost unbearable tension, the film paints a shocking yet deeply human portrait of family, responsibility and the longing for something else, one rounded off with a tragic finale that hits hard.
