With the reburial, the grandmother's family fulfils the woman’s last great wish: to find her final resting place in the homeland that, until she fled the war, had been her home. Nikola, on the other hand, had to leave the small Dalmatian village as a child; his few remaining memories are vague. As an adult, he is firmly rooted in Serbia, where he and his partner are expecting a child and he dreams of repurposing a van for future family vacations and finally making a film of his own again. And yet this reunion with the places and people of his childhood leads him to ask questions: about the ambivalence of memory, familial trauma, and the stories we tell ourselves about our own past.
HOW COME IT'S ALL GREEN OUT HERE is Serbian director Nikola Ležaić's second feature film, following on from his acclaimed debut TILVA ROŠ (2010). In this autobiographical work, he portrays his namesake protagonist as a film-maker struggling to navigate the compromises that come with being an artist and a father-to-be. Above all however, it subtly yet poignantly tells the story of a complex family structure in the post-Yugoslav present, one in which the past is literally embedded in its bones.
