LIJEPA VEČER, LIJEP DAN

BEAUTIFUL EVENING, BEAUTIFUL DAY

Yugoslavia, 1957. Lovro, Nenad, Stevan, and Ivan, former partisans, are pursuing careers at the state film studio. They are gay however, their backgrounds too bourgeois, and their films too critical. Political pressure sees them end up on the infamous prison island of "Goli Otok." Epic and dynamic cinema dedicated to the treatment of alleged "deviants" in a totalitarian system and how to remain human despite it all.

When the political atmosphere once again worsens and the renowned film-maker quartet’s works come to be deemed too politically sensitive, Comrade Emir is appointed to the role of studio director and tasked with sabotaging the four's careers. In place of subtle criticism, the plan is now to focus on propaganda, an approach even Emir finds rather heavy-handed. The aloof functionary slowly comes to sympathise with the acclaimed young film-makers and begins to doubt the sincerity of a system from which he himself benefits. By that point however, the fate of his new friends has already been sealed – and that despite the fact that they had helped drive the Nazis out of the country and fight the Ustaše a decade and a half earlier. Director Ivona Juka tackles a topic that is rarely thematised in the exploration of totalitarianism: the treatment of sexual minorities. Employing both epic cinematography and direct cinema, she reflects on fundamental questions of the human condition, political and social pressures to conform, individual choice in questions of empathy, the interpersonal power of friendship, and the inner doubts of the conformist.
