A dark coming-of-age epic about myth and truth. Andor lives in the belief that he is the son of a missing Jewish father. When, one day, a brutal butcher claims to be his true father, a bitter battle of David versus Goliath begins.

Hungary in the aftermath of the 1956 uprising: Andor clings to the image of an invisible hero – his Jewish father, lost in the war. For the boy, he represents pride, identity, and an inner defence against the anti-Semitic hatred that echoes from the streets of post-war Hungary. This fragile construct shatters however when the burly butcher Berend appears and claims to be his father. Unwilling to accept his fate, Andor uncovers the shocking, dark truth between his mother Klára and Berend. Inspired by the story of his own father, László Nemes (SON OF SAUL) narrates a gripping suspense drama about the transmission of trauma from generation to generation and the eerie return of violence. Shot in mystical 35mm images by Mátyás Erdély, ORPHAN unfurls the oppressive atmosphere of a time when the world is sinking into the chaos of postwar ruins. Amidst the rubble, a boy has to decide whether he is willing to stand up for the truth.
