35 YEARS OF GERMAN UNIFICATION

Obenkino, Fri 07.11. | 15:30

3 films, 102 min

Thirty-five years ago, the Unification Treaty between the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic sealed the reunification of the two states. Restricted freedom of expression, ecological upheavals in the Cottbus energy district and political arbitrariness led committed GDR citizens to organise themselves into reform movements. First secretly, then publicly, they voiced their political demands. In the films, contemporary witnesses recount personal tragedies or their role in these reform movements.

On November 11, 1989, the Serbska narodna zhromadźizna, the Sorbian People's Assembly, was founded in Bautzen. It called for dialogue and demanded fundamental change from the Domowina. Mato Šołta documented the activities and meetings with a handheld camera, where Pastor Jan Malink, among others, played a key role. Exciting insights into a historical film document of Sorbian contemporary history.
