Performance
Ester is 45, a single mother – and her life mostly revolves around caring for her son David. When a short vacation with friends in Italy turns sour, she starts the engine of her old caravan in the dead of night and drives off, David in tow. Under the southern Calabrian sun, the wild Zuza joins them and turns their tightly scheduled mother-son routine upside down. They soon find themselves short of money however, Ester falls in love – and comes to the realisation that freedom always comes at a price. Masterfully captured, Zuzana Kirchnerová's CARAVAN speaks of the crushing burden of familial responsibility, the contradictions of maternal love, and the courage it takes to belong to yourself, if only for a moment. The film celebrated its world premiere at this year's Cannes Film Festival. A softly-spoken, light-filled case for self-determination, made deeply-touching by its sensitive acting performances.
