OAMENI DE TREABĂ

Men Of Deeds

Paul Negoescu
RO, 2022, 104 Min

A corruption-themed farce bordering on madness. Police officer Ilie is in the middle of a burnout and yet he doesn't notice a thing. The little village policeman wants nothing but an orchard and turns a blind eye to the quite obviously criminal activities taking place in the village. Ultimately, it is a murder case that removes him from his twilight state and leads him straight into hot water.

Ilie's relatives are concerned since, for no apparent reason, he acts as if he's been given tranquillisers. Ambition, desires or dreams? None of the above. Although not quite; Ilie yearns for a small orchard where he can escape from the world. His lack of zest for life is also reflected in his job as a village policeman. There he’s highly popular since he allows corruption and black-market dealings to flourish without asking for much in return; apart from the garden, of course. But when the village leaders go too far and unexpectedly murder an opponent the comic tragedy begins to take its course. Drawing on the example of a small village, Paul Negoescu laconically illustrates the consequences of years of turning a blind eye to long-existing problems, a weakness from which the Romanian state apparatus has long suffered; and treats us, towards the film’s end, to one of the most grotesque shootout scenes in film history.
