IDA, KI JE PELA TAKO GRDO, DA SO ŠE MRTVI VSTALI OD MRTVIH IN ZAPELI Z NJO

IDA WHO SANG SO BADLY EVEN THE DEAD ROSE UP AND JOINED HER IN SONG

Ester Ivakič
SI/HR, 2025, 109 Min

Can a song bring back the dead? Ida firmly believes so – after all, it once worked with her grandmother. It’s just too bad her audition for the school choir was such a disaster. How is she now supposed to ensure her grandmother's survival? A magical, humorous literary adaptation on a childhood spent in rural Slovenia in the 1970s.

IDA WHO SANG SO BADLY EVEN THE DEAD ROSE UP AND JOINED HER IN SONG light-heartedly introduces us to the emotional world of this very serious schoolgirl. While her parents are constantly arguing, Ida finds comfort in her dog Maca and her beloved grandmother. And, of course, in Terezka, her best friend. After Ida is forced to abandon her plans for the school choir, it is she who is thankfully able to come up with an alternative strategy to make Ida’s wishes come true: a few secret Hail Marys in the chapel in the forest and then the Blessed Mother will surely not only protect Ida's grandmother but also take revenge on her mean teacher, Comrade Rebernik.

With no shortage of humour, a touch of magic and great sympathy for her characters, Ester Ivakič tells the story of a childhood caught between socialist discipline and a poorly disguised Catholicism. For her debut film, the Slovenian director was inspired by a novel by author and queer activist Suzana Tratnik, known for her stories about outsider characters and their tales of growing up in the provinces, in this case Prekmurje.
